There are many benefits to becoming a Canadian citizen. I few of the most commonly listed benefits are things like free healthcare and education up until post secondary. Canada also provides old age pension for those over the age of 65 who no longer work.

But did you also know that Canada ranks 3rd in overall human rights world wide (Human Freedom Index). Canada is even higher then the United Stated who ranked 15th overall.

What more could you ask for?


There are specific requirements an applicant must meet.

First, the applicant must meet the residency requirements. Generally, one has to be living in Canada as a permanent resident for 3 of the past five years. However, there are exceptions to this rule, especially if the applicant was a temporary resident beforehand.

There are also language requirements which requires documentation. In this category there are a number of government certified tests the applicant can choose from for providing proof of language ability. These requirements may vary depending on your country of origin, i.e. those arriving from other English speaking nations.

Finally, there is the issue of police certificates. Generally, if you have been in another country for six months or more in the last four years, you need a police certificate. As stated by the Government of Canada, “A police certificate is a statement that you don’t have a criminal record or, if you have one, a copy of your criminal record”.

To apply for Citizenship, you must have stayed in Canada for a minimum of four out of the last six years before applying. You also need to demonstrate competence of the official language if you are between the ages of 18-65. Overall you must prove that you have established significant ties with Canada and plan on staying here in the future.

Lottery For Sponsoring Parents and Grandparents

Effective October 13th, the Government of Canada will implement a lottery system for sponsoring parents and grandparents. There will be a three week window for those interested in this program to submit their applications of interest. Following this applicants will be drawn from the lottery to be able to apply for a sponsorship. Those chosen will have 60 days to apply. In addition these spots have been reduced from 20,000 last year to only 10,000 this year, with the remainder added to next years intake of 30,000.

There's good news for those apply for spousal sponsorship this year. The IRCC announced on September 24th, that they will be increasing the amount of decisions made to 49,000 by the end of the year. This means 6000 applications processed per month by December.
