Extending your stay in Canada due to Covid-19
With airlines such as Air Canada reducing their international network from 53 to 13 locations, and the ever-growing number of Covid-19 cases in major travel hubs such as in the United States, many international travelers may find themselves looking for other options. For some this means staying in Canada longer.
If you are one of those looking to extend your stay (visitor or temporary resident visa) due to travel restrictions or out of safety concerns, the Canadian government does offer and opportunity for you to extend your stay past the 6-month limit. Keep in mind that this extension should be applied for no less than 30 days before this same 6-month limit.
The Government of Canada’s immigration policy states that if you would like to extend your stay in Canada that you must apply for a ” visitor record”. A visitor record is a document that provides its holder with a newly defined date that they must leave Canada by (usually 6 months extension). This document also allows those with a student or work permits to change their status to visitor.
This process, however, is not free and does come with a fee paid to the Government of Canada’s immigration office. Furthermore, it is up to the discretion of the IRCC (Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada) to determine if, and how long you will be allowed to stay.
