With 51% of immigration quotas for 2021 set aside for more skilled and financially well-off individuals, Canada seeks to grow its technology sector (Statistics Canada).
Buts what is making so many skilled laborers make the move to Canada so suddenly?
For starters, it’s said that Canadians are a lot more welcoming to new comers compared to that of our neighbors to the south. On a per capita bases Canada admits three times as many new immigrants than the US each year. Although this number is still lower in total immigrants, it does reflect government policy and ease of entry into the country.
Secondly, we must look at the United States current stance on immigration. A January 2020 article featured in NPR states that “Under the Trump administration, high-skilled workers are getting rejected at a higher rate. In 2015, 92% of new H-1B visa applications were approved. But in the last two years, the approval rate dipped to only 75%”. The Trump administration in June extended its green card ban until the end of 2020 and put a pause on temporary work visas to free up space for more American born workers. These new policies, as well as the uncertainty in job security are sending many to Canadian markets.
And finally, the rapidly growing tech industry in Canada is enticing many skilled laborers. Of the cities that ranked in the top 10 for tech industry growth in North America, Toronto came first, with Vancouver not far behind in fifth place over the past 5 years. This comes at an advantage to job seekers from other countries as Canada’s population growth has slowed from 0.96% in 2016 to 0.89% in 2020, looking to level out around 0.45% in the next 30 years. This could also be a contributing factor in why Canada has been focusing on attracting more skilled workers, and an opportunity for many to enter the jobs market.
With all this being said, now may be the right time to be looking into a Canadian work visa if you have 1-year skilled work experience, proven language skill and education.
